Why Mindfulness
Stress is a part of our lives. It is not always such a bad thing. In fact, we need it. At the same time, stress can often overcome us. It can become difficult to handle. Stress often interferes with happiness. Mindfulness is a way of being. It is not something you do. And it is not temporary. It is a practice. Mindfulness helps us regulate our emotions, decrease our stress, and can help increase our focus. Mindfulness helps us to observe our thoughts so we become less judgmental, something the whole world needs. Whether you are a parent, a student, a corporate executive, an athlete or just looking to make change in your life, learning to pause, notice and not judge can always make the world a better place
The amygdala is great if there is a saber-toothed tiger in front of us.
The amygdala is not so good for issues of everyday life.
We can control our amygdala's, but it is darn difficult. It takes practice, time, intention, and persistence.
Mindfulness: Your Superpower
THE SCIENCE
When our brains sense danger, they have a built-in mechanism called the amygdala.
The amygdala's job is to protect us. Amazing, right?!
Sort of.
The amygdala is great if there is a saber-toothed tiger in front of us.
The amygdala is not so good for issues of everyday life.
We can control our amygdalas, but it is darn difficult. It takes practice: time, intention, and persistence.
Neuroplasticity is the term used for creating those new pathways in the brain that allow us to RESPOND rather than REACT.
For our youth, this can be especially difficult. Not because they are kids, rather their prefrontal cortex is not yet developed like an adult.
